Missouri School of Journalism

In September 2008, alumni, students, faculty and friends will gather on campus to celebrate a milestone in the history of the Missouri School of Journalism — our centennial. As we near 100, we continue to be a global leader in journalism education.

You, our alumni and friends, built the foundation for our success:

  • All of our buildings, beginning with Neff Hall in 1919, were constructed largely with private funds;
  • Many of our world-class faculty were attracted to Missouri because of privately endowed chairs;
  • Generous alumni have created hundreds of scholarships that help us recruit the brightest students from around the world.

On the eve of our centennial, we have the opportunity to ensure that legacy for future generations. Through our 100 by 100 campaign, we seek to increase the level of the School’s endowment to $100 million by our 100th year.

An endowment is a savings account, as opposed to a checking account. The principal is invested and returns on it pay a fixed percentage of the annual value to a designated account each year, reinvesting additional earnings and building up the fund over time. Because the payout is typically 5 percent each year, the fund is set up to last forever.

With less than 20 percent of the University’s total budget coming from state funds, private support is critical to maintaining the quality of our hallmark Missouri Method.

Your support for School of Journalism endowments will preserve our standards of excellence forever.
